Montessori Monday~ Advent Week 3~ DIY Ornaments

Its Monday again and that means its time for my Montessori Monday post! I have a few new trays that the girls are really excited about and they are of course Christmas themed! I love being able to help bring the Christmas joy into our school routine! So here are the new trays for the week:

Flipping Cookies
(This idea is from The Work Plan)

Tracing around cookie cutters
(This idea is from Montessori Moments. I didn’t put it on a tray since they can take it to the table where the pencils and paper are all ready to go!)

Christmas Ornament Tray
(This idea is one I found on Pintrest here. I modified it a bit so the girls could do it all on their own!)
Materials:
5×5″ pieces of paper
pipe cleaners (cut in half)
beads
star stickers
(I found some self adhesive wooden stars at Hobby Lobby)
Circle inset
Scissors
Directions:
Have the child trace and cut 2 or three circles
Then the child makes small cuts around the edges to add dimension
Next cut a slit to the middle of the circle
Fold the edges around to make a cone.
Staple it together
Do this for all the circles then cut a small hole in the top of the cone
Take the pipe cleaner and fold a knot in the end
Push it put the under first cone
Add a bead, then the next cone. (another bead and cone if you have 3)
The fold the rest of the pipe cleaner into a loop and add the sticker star!
Super easy and fun!
The girls were so excited to try out the new works and they also had fun working all the older works too! (I did shut them in the school room with me so that they could work better, Pup and Bug keep running around the house). I love watching them work and learn! Here are some of the works I was able to catch!
Pup wanted this work right away!

Bunny wanted to trace the cookie cutters. She worked on this for a long time and loved it!

Bug joined her and did one of each, and was she proud of her work! She is still working on holding a pencil and writing, so this was right up her alley! She loved it!

Bunny cut all of hers out!

After they finished the tracing they all wanted to know how to make the tree. So I gave the presentation and they got to work right away!

They all loved their trees and I think that we have a new tray that will be alot! I loved that Bunny was able to do all of it alone, and Bug just needed help with the stapler!

Tadpole was really working hard on this for a while.

While I helped Pup, Bunny was helping Bug with her letter sounds! 🙂

She did a great job with sounds. I gave her the sound “o” today. We’ll see if she remembers it later! 🙂

While I was working with the other kids, Pup did all of this on her own! 🙂

Here is Bunny working on the reading work I made the other day! I added some new sentences for her to try! It was really hard for her and I wasn’t able to give her a ton of help since Tadpole needed me too. She was able to read one whole one alone, but she really was frustrated and upset that I couldn’t help her. I hope that doesn’t make her hate the work.

The chalk board with water was a HUGE hit again!!!! They all loved it! Pup and Bug both practiced shapes and a few letters! It is such great writing practice!

Bug and Pup wrapped gifts and they did an amazing job!
I was amazed at how well they did! All I did was rip the tape off for them! Christmas here they come!

Bunny built the trinomial cube outside the box today! She was so proud when she finished!

Pup was proud of her gift wrapping too!

After a while Bunny did more trees! We have a plan for all these ornaments that we have made. We will have a new ornament tray tomorrow!

And Tadpole really made a leap in development! He knocked down the pink tower, and then…..he built what he knocked down back up!!!!!! Yeah!!!!! I am so happy that he is getting it!
So that was our day today! Join me tomorrow for another ornament craft and some taking time fun! If you want to see more Montessori work, please be sure to visit Deb at Living Montessori Now and Nicole at One Hook Wonder for their Montessori Monday Link up! I liked up there! Happy Schooling everyone!

Snowflake Ornament Craft!

Here is a craft that we did this morning and the girls just loved! I did this years ago when Bunny was small and I cant remember where I saw it! It may have been from Family Fun. All it took was popsicle sticks, buttons, and glue! Super great! Each girl picked out three perfect sticks, then I hot glued them together (I learned the hard way last time we did this that tacky glue takes forever to dry and ti falls apart like crazy when you are doing the buttons)! The rest is mostly independent! All they need to do is put glue on the sticks and then put whatever buttons they find pretty! Now I am all for free art, but sometimes a structured project is fun and a great souse of pride when they see it hanging on the tree. They had a ton of fun picking out the buttons and putting them just so! 😉 Not to mention they look really pretty when they are done! Here are some pictures!

Aren’t they pretty? Again, it is a simple and fun Christmas ornament craft! I actually think they are really pretty and I love to see them on the tree! Last time we did this project with Bunny, we used colored sticks and they were really awesome (I didn’t have any today)! If you try this let me know, I love to see what other people’s projects look like! Happy Crafting!

Montessori Monday~ Advent week 2!

So this week I have kept almost all the same tray (Bunny was disappointed, but hey, I cant do it all)! There are a few new ones though! We are still focusing on Christmas themes since our work time is a little broken up due to the holiday fun we are having! Here are the new trays:

One to One with mini ornaments and chopsticks

Chirtmas Napkins with Napkin Rings

Gift Wrapping
(Note: I pre-cut the paper so that it fits a certain box)

Our work day was not much. We ended up making cookies instead (sorry no pics, my hands were busy)! Both Bunny and Bug did most of the work and they really enjoyed baking! It really made the house feel Christmasy! The kids also got down to do a little bit of work and I was able to some pictures of that.
Gift wrapping

Tadpole got to unwrap! 😉

Pup did it too, and she did a great job!

Tadpole did this one to one work!
I like that the ornaments could also allow for the three finger grip if you hold them from the top!

Pup loves the napkin rings!

Bunny always chooses the prophecy card work right away!
I take the time to ask her some reflection questions when she starts so that she can go deeper into the work.
Her thoughts today blew me away! You can read them here!

Bug did an amazing green triangle (Christmas tree) inset today. She worked super hard at coloring it in the lines! She was so proud of it and I hope that she repeats this work soon!

Tadpole really is fascinated with tongs! He loves to try and get them to work! While I know he will have limited success with this work, he is so interested in doing it that I let him explore it!
So that was our day today! It was relaxed and easy, but I think that the kids had fun! I also didnt push too much since I think everyone here is fighting the start of a small cold. 🙁 Oh well. Its that time of year! Tomorrow is St. Nick’s Day and Bunny is SOOOO excited! She has told everyone that Santa is coming tonight! This confuses everyone, but I love it! She associates the saint who loves God with the Santa that brings gifts! Isnt that sweet? I love my girls!
There is a ton of great Montessori work going on this week! To see all of it, visit Deb at

Oh Christmas Tree….

Today we put up our tree!!!! I love putting up out tree. It is just so full of memories and joy! I love the sparkle of colored lights, the excitement of the kids, and the surprise of pulling out each ornament! You see in our family ornaments are a big tradition. We dont just have a pile of them from the store, the collection has been being put together since I was born. Each year my Grandma would buy each of us a new ornament. She would hang them on the tree and we would get to her house and try to figure out which one was just for us. She spent hours and hours picking out just the right one. She must have gone to a million stores a year looking for the perfect ornament! After she died, my mom took over the tradition, putting her own crafty twist on it! She makes everyone in the family their own ornament! So now with my collection, and the one that my girls are making, and the ones that belong to my hubbie, out tree drips with ornaments! I love them all! I love the puffy stuffed ones, the hallmark ones, and the handmade with love ones! They are all perfect! So decorating the tree is a fun and memorable experience! So here are a few pictures of our decorating (there is not a ton of pictures sine I was helping)!

So we are all decorated for the Holiday here! The tree is a really special part of the holidays for us and I love it! What are the special parts of your holidays? I love to hear all about what you do at Christmas!
